Drawing 2011 is Drawing Room’s biennial fundraiser. For the fifth time Drawing Room sent over 400 artists a blank sheet of A4 paper, inviting them to show their support by donating a drawing to be sold in their silent auction. With over 200 responses Drawing 2011 is a wonderful display of artists’ ideas, thoughts and progressions, all married through their challenged creativity of being presented on an A4 sheet. The result is a fantastic array of medium, design and approach — indeed a postcardwall of different artists. It is rare to see so many images alongside each other and the effect is absorbing; one reads the walls as if they were lined with words, pausing at each to decipher the language, working their way along the many rows. It’s easy to get lost in such an assembly of work but inevitably one picks up favourites, spurned on by the fact that there is the potential to bid and own. Engrained in my mind is the piercing stare of George Shaw’s bald gentleman, peering round a corner accompanied by a cup and saucer; Jonathan Allen’s floating beard, hairs parted to a smile; Charles Avery’s futurist-like streamlined cyclist; Bernhard Martin’s pencilled-in legs on stilts and Leo Fitzmaurice’s curious yellow duster — sculpted paper with the red stitching drawn on. Some of my personal favourites (as pictured above) are John Kindness’s Study for Mr. & Mrs. Andrews, regency figures trapped in time — their arms unravelling in scrolls of paper; Uwe Wittwer’s softly drawn platforms of ascension; and Oliver Zwink’s fantastically surreal hand — fingers translucent in colour, bulbous or delicately tapered at the mercy of his ever describing pencil. A fantastical collection, these drawing were perhaps all the more bewitching in the knowledge of their fleeting existence together.
